Samoyed Dogs - Breed Origins
Samoyeds were first bred by the nomadic tribe of hunter-gatherers called the Samoyedin who were found in a remote area of northern Siberia. Purified by several thousand years of complete isolation of the dog gene pools, there is very little variation among the breed. By far the most unchanged, Samoyeds are one of the oldest breeds of dogs in the world.
A few polar explorers used Samoyeds on their sled teams and claimed that these dogs were intelligent, resourceful and kind animals. Before the 1930s, Russia did not allow any non-Russian anthropologists to study the native Siberian people; consequently the Samoyed dogs were unknown. A few of these dogs eventually ended up in Britain where the standards for Samoyeds were set.
The Samoyedic people from Western Siberia also bred and raised Samoyed dogs, but these were often brown or black in color. These dogs had been mixed with other breeds because the Western area was more accessible to visitors. A total of twelve Samoyeds were imported to Britain that were purebred, and those dogs are responsible for the full line of Samoyeds today. Samoyed Dogs - Health Issues
Samoyeds are generally healthy dogs. This dog breed is prone to hip dysplasia. Some dogs may suffer from diabetes. Skin allergies can also affect Samoyeds. The Samoyed does well in an apartment. However, this breed needs to be sufficiently exercised. Due to their thick coats, Samoyeds are unsuitable for hot climates.
